Estate Planning for College Children

1.  What documents are needed?

a. Legal documents naming a trusted person as their "health care proxy" or "Power of Attorney". This person can make medical decisions on the college student's behalf if they become incapacitated and unable to speak for themselves.

b. HIPAA release (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996). This law protects patient privacy, while allowing certain named persons to informed by medical professionals on their condition.

c. Financial Power of Attorney. This allows the college student's financial accounts to be accessed as needed, by the trusted named person. This ensures that bills are paid and other necessary financial transactions are completed.
